Thanks to Samsung and its newest VR headset, virtual reality is finally more accessible to the average consumer. Officially called the Gear VR, this Oculus Rift-powered device is garnering a lot of attention despite some of its shortcomings like a restrictive walled garden.
Considered to be one of the best consumer friendly headsets currently on the market, the Gear VR uses the Samsung Galaxy phone as its processor and display. Your phone fits into a Micro USB dock in front of the lens while its display acts as your screen.
Samsung’s first attempt is a fantastic view of what the future holds and how virtual reality can be integrated into your favorite devices. Another major player on the market making VR waves includes the Zeiss ZR One, which gives you the flexibility to use any iOS or Android handset between 4.7 and 5.2 inches. The ZR One also includes a media player to showcase pictures and youtube videos with an open source Unity3D SDK (both Android and iOS). This means there’s tons of room for development with a wide open playing field.
Not to be left out, Google has also entered the market with a Cardboard VR headset with hopes of making virtual reality a real possibility for a price of just $29.95. That’s right … we said, “cardboard.” It may sound ridiculous to squeeze your iPhone into a cardboard box and expect, well … anything at all, but it really does work. The question is … how well?
For those looking for an optimum virtual reality experience, it’s true that mobile device options like the Gear VR Headset, the Zeiss ZR, and Google Cardboard VR may not fully deliver. Never-the-less, onlookers at CES 2016 couldn’t miss the number of people dabbling with such devices hoping to be WOWed.
As the capabilities of mobile devices continue to evolve, virtual reality will surely become common place in the not-to-distant future, infiltrating everything from gaming to movie entertainment. What are you’re thoughts on VR and have you had any experiences with above mentioned devices? If so, make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments!
