The emoji revolution may be leaving tech users all over the world speechless, but people definitely have varying opinions about the obvious trend. And it seems that most are pretty clear about their emoji emotions … it’s either a love or hate relationship that’s intensifying with every passing smiley.
Regardless of how we feel about the emoji’s surge in popularity, there’s no denying the incredible impact it’s having on the way we communicate with each other. With the quick tap of pizza emoji you can have a steaming hot pie delivered to your door in thirty minutes or less, but these little characters can accomplish a lot more than merely satisfying a late night craving.
The Emoji and You
The real benefit of an emoji is that it can convey a sentiment that can’t otherwise be understood via a text message. It is a tool used to easily and quickly clarify the meaning of a phrase and the emotion behind it. The emoji is taking the guesswork out of texting and potentially curbing our frustrations with purely written communications.
However, many people believe that the emoji is promoting a culture of laziness when it comes to making the most of our written language. Despite the backlash, the Oxford University Press declared the “Face with Tears of Joy” emoji to be the “word of the year,” further infuriating naysayers and emoji haters worldwide.
According to the Professor of Linguistics at Bangor University, Vyv Evans, the emoji simply enhances our daily communications:
“[The Word of the Year award] challenges people’s perceptions of language and what a word actually is. The reason is that it’s so prevalent, emoji is the current form of communication. Over 6 billion emoji sent everyday last year. I think in some way it’s quite apt that an emoji has been selected.”
With both Professor Evans and the Oxford University Press in it’s corner, the emoji continues to evolve and appear in even the most unexpected places, now entrenched in our personal communications.
