Less people are buying cell phones in 2018 than they did in years past. Sales are dropping despite the technological prowess of the phone market: the edge-to-edge displays, the lightning fast fingerprint readers, the powerful cameras, etc. Why the dip and why should you keep your old phone?
The need to buy some new phone every 1-2 years has decreased. We believe there are a few reasons why you should hesitate to buy a new phone.
1. The Improvements Between Phones Are Minimal
While smartphones are becoming more advanced, the margin between a phone released in 2016 and a phone released in 2018 is slim. If your phone is still in good condition, you won’t be receiving much value for upgrading your device. You must consider the purposes of your phone. If you simply use it to take pictures, text, and use social media, it’s likely that your current phone model will suffice.
2. Many Flagships Aren’t Worth the Price
The age of affordable flagships has long passed, and we are now seeing flagships reach the $1,000 mark. While many brands will say that you are “paying for innovation,” we don’t believe this to be the case. While phones are better than ever, the innovation from year-to-year doesn’t really warrant such extravagant price tags.
3. Prices Will Continue to Rise
It’s easy to fall into the trap of buying a new phone each year. Constantly buying the newest iteration is a slippery slope, and you can easily spend thousands of dollars in a span of a few years. That $1,000 price tag for the top smartphone can jump to $1,200 a year from now, and you can become convinced of the need to pay that outrageous price because the brand says you need to.
4. You Won’t Miss Out on Updates and New Apps
A common misconception is that you need a new phone to download certain apps or to receive updates to the operating system. This is mostly untrue, as most devices receive updates on a regular basis, and new apps will still be available for you to download.
5. Get the Most Value from Your Current Device
Instead of jumping from phone to phone every year, you can extract the full value from your current phone model. If your phone is well maintained, it can last for years. The money you would spend on a new device can be put towards other things: a short vacation, a new piece of furniture, your savings account, etc. By avoiding the unnecessary purchase of a new phone, you can put your money to use in other ways.
